Projects Win in Engineering Excellence Competition

Two El Paso Water Utilities projects were winners in the Texas Council of Engineering Companies Engineering Excellence Competition – the Kay Bailey Hutchison Desalination Facilities and the Zaragoza 36-inch Waterline Replacement.

The Engineering Excellence Awards Competition recognizes outstanding achievements in the engineering community. Projects were selected based on uniqueness, originality, value to the engineering profession, complexity and successfully meeting the client’s needs.

CDM and Moreno Cardenas received the Gold Award for their entry of the Kay Bailey Hutchison Desalination Facilities. Moreno Cardenas was the prime consultant and overall program manager for the $87.5 million project, and CDM served as a sub-consultant providing planning, design and construction management services.

Brown and Caldwell received a Silver Award for the Zaragoza Waterline Replacement Project. The engineering consultant planned, designed, and provided construction management services for the project, which was fast-tracked to minimize disruption to traffic along Zaragoza Road.

The contractor used slip-lining to insert the new PVC pipe instead of using the open trench method more commonly used to lay pipes. The project was completed in record time.
