Mayor John F. Cook worked for more than 25 years in the telecommunications industry before retiring in 1991. He subsequently taught in the El Paso Independent School District and worked in several family-owned businesses.

In 1999, Mayor Cook was elected to the City Council. He was elected Mayor of El Paso in2005 and re-elected to a second term in 2009.

Mayor Cook serves on a number of boards and civic organizations. He was elected to the National League of Cities Board of Directors in 2009, and he is president of the Texas Border Commission and chief elected official of the Upper Rio Grande Workforce Development Board. He is also a member and past president of the Rio Grande Council of Governments Board and a member of the El Paso Regional Economic Development Corporation Board of Directors.

Mayor Cook holds a bachelor’s degree in business arts from the University of Texas at El Paso. He is an ex-officio member of the Public Service Board and will serve as long as he is mayor of El Paso.
