Mayor John F. Cook, a native of Brooklyn, New York, enlisted in the U.S. Army after graduating from high school. He completed assignments in Maryland and Texas before being deployed to the Republic of South Viet Nam where he worked as a special agent in Military Intelligence.
Mayor Cook worked for more than 25 years in the telecommunications industry before retiring in 1991. After teaching in the El Paso Independent School District, he worked with his family in several family-owned businesses, including Hoang Food Products and Cook and Associates, a marketing, management and fund-raising consultant firm.
In 1999, Mayor Cook was elected to City Council. He was elected mayor of El Paso in 2005 and re-elected for a second term in 2009.
The mayor represents the City of El Paso on numerous boards and civic organizations. He is the immediate past president of the Texas Municipal League, president-elect of the Texas Border Commission and chief elected official of the Upper Rio Grande Workforce Development Board. He is also a member and past president of the Rio Grande Council of Governments Board and a member of the Regional Economic Development Corporation Board of Directors.
Mayor Cook holds a bachelor’s degree in business arts from the University of Texas at El Paso.
