2007 Essay Contest - "The Value of Water"

Middle school category:
Middle school category: Although water is common on Earth, some people value water more than others. Why is that? If you were stranded in a desert and someone offered you diamonds or water, which would you choose? Why? Would your choice be different if you were living in a city? How do you use water and how does it impact/improve your life daily? Overall, how is water valuable to your life?

High school category:
The value of water has different meanings for people. Misconceptions and/or lack of information can influence how people value water. What are some of these misconceptions and how can we make the best decisions about man- aging our water resources? Consider social, cultural and economic backgrounds that bring about different degrees of value when addressing both the quantity and quality of water in the Chihuahuan Desert?

Guidelines:

Any essays without the following guidelines will not be judged. Contest is open to local students, grades 6th - 12th and is divided into two categories:

• Grades 6th, 7th and 8th, must write a 500 word essay, not counting reference page. Essay must be typewritten using a 12-point Times New Roman font, and double spaced.
• Grades 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th, must write a 1,000 word essay, not counting reference page. Essay must be typewritten using a 12-point Times New Roman font, and double spaced.
• All essays must include MLAstyle (cover page, citation, etc.)
• Essays will be judged on the proper use of language and grammar principles.
• Please download the document below, fill out the form and attach it to the back left hand corner of your essay paper. Any paper without this form will not be judged.
• Essays must be submitted to the El Paso Water Utilities, Conservation Department at 1154 Hawkins by 5:00 p.m. on Monday, April 16, 2007. An awards presentation will be held. Location and date to be announced.
• All essays become the property of El Paso Water Utilities.

Prizes:

There will be a 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winner from each grade.
