USO El Paso is building a second facility to accommodate 30,000 additional troops being deployed to Fort Bliss, and El Paso Water Utilities employees and customers are helping with the project. A check for $28,307.43 was presented to the organization at the July 22 Public Service Board meeting.

Nearly $22,000 of the contribution came from employee fundraising activities and a golf tournament co-sponsored by Touchstone Golf. The balance was through customer donations.

The new building will contain a gaming area, Internet café, movie theater and conference facilities for active duty military personnel and their families. The EPWU donation will be used to purchase items such as furniture, computers and televisions for the 6,400-square-foot complex, which will open early next year.

Each year, the Public Service Board forms a partnership with a nonprofit organization whose mission focuses on improving the El Paso community. This year’s partner is the USO.

Staff works with the selected agency to raise funds through employee community service hours, fundraising activities or other initiatives, and advertising is allowed through bill inserts. No direct funding is provided.
