El Paso - El Paso Water Utilities was recognized last month at the National Association of Clean Water Agencies 2009 Summer Conference for its outstanding Environmental Stewardship. All four of EPWU’s wastewater facilities received awards recognizing their continuous compliance with the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System requirements.

“The plants were recognized for their outstanding job and dedication in serving our community. Plant employees have consistently maintained the excellence of the operation, maintenance, and administration of the plants,” said Wastewater Treatment Manager William Quinn.

The Northwest, Haskell Street, Roberto Bustamante, and Fred Hervey Water Reclamation Plants have been providing recycled water to various areas in El Paso like the Ascarate Municipal Golf Course for decades. They must comply with parameters set by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) to obtain a permit.

EPWU has a long history of awards for compliance in meeting or exceeding these standards. This year, the Northwest plant was recognized as a multi-year platinum honoree because it has been in compliance with TCEQ standards for ten years. The Fred Hervey and Roberto Bustamante Plants received gold awards and the Haskell Plant earned the silver.
