EPWU calls for water conservation: The first line of defense against drought River water not expected until early June

El Paso typically obtains 50 percent of its water supply from the Rio Grande. But the water at Elephant Butte is at historically low levels, and the water is expected to be released into the river on June 1. The late release means the river will remain dry, and EPWU expects to begin distributing river water from its treatment plants during first week of June. These factors and an anticipated forecast for increasing temperatures in mid to late May have created a period of critical water conservation for El Paso.
