Task 1 The snow pack in Southern Colorado has not met the average rain fall in the past three years. Discuss how this will affect the Rio Grande/Rio Bravo Basin.
  • Draw a map of the Rio Grande Watershed and label at least 5 states and eight communities within Mexico and the U.S that are within this watershed.
  • List the uses of this renewable resource.
  • Report on the impact caused from below average snowfall and include any social, political, cultural, economical and environmental implications this shortage may cause.
Task 2 Increase in development and population is a dilemma the whole world is faced with. Unfortunately many natural resources are limited and are significantly being stressed. The Rio Grande/Rio Bravo watershed is a fragile ecoregion that has been greatly impacted by development.
  • Discuss your position on agricultural versus Municipal use, and does one outweigh the other in regards to importance or priority?
  • Survey students, teachers, parents, etc. to prioritize and rationalize essential uses such as:
    • Agriculture
    • Municipal
    • Wildlife Restoration and Preservation
    • Culture and Heritage Preservation
    • Recreation
    • Other
  • Graph the results


Task 3 Water quality is dependent on several factors
  • List Point source and Non-Point source Pollutants.
  • How does water quantity affect Water Quality?
Task 4 Scenario
  • You are walking along an irrigation canal and notice discarded tires, a metal tub, a mattress, empty oil cans and about 20 white kitchen bags full of trash. Is this a point or non-point source pollution and what risks do you see may occur to the river?
  • What should you do?
Task 5
  • Draw a diagram of the Water Treatment Plant System and describe each stage of treatment.
  • Use your imagination and design your own water treatment plant, for example, harvesting rain water for drinking.
