Planning to Buy a New Washing Machine?
Thanks to El Paso Water Utilities, buying a new washing machine with an Energy Star rating can pay off in more ways than one for savvy consumers. In addition to the water and energy savings symbolized by the Energy Star label, residence customers are eligible for a $100 rebate through a new clothes washing machine rebate program.
EPWU and the City of El Paso Sustainability Department collaborated on an application for federal stimulus funding for various green projects. El Paso was awarded $5 million in grants for several projects, including $500,000 for a washing machine rebate program. Rebates will be awarded as long as funds are available and on a first-come, first-served basis.
Program Guidelines
To be eligible for the rebate, the machine must be purchased from a store located within the city limits, and it must remain installed in the utility’s service area for at least five years. EPWU will make a site visit to verify that the new machine is installed and operating before processing the rebate. The old machine will be picked up for recycling at the time of the verification.
The Consortium of Energy Efficiency lists the brands and model numbers of clothes washers that qualify for the rebate program at www.cee1.org. For program guidelines, visit the conservation section of our web site or call 621-2002.
