S.J. Louis Construction Inc. has been selected to build facilities to carry reclaimed water to large turf areas in North Central El Paso. This will be the first phase of a multiyear, multiphase project that will include reclaimed water service for Fort Bliss.
Reclaimed water is recycled wastewater that has received advanced treatment to improve its quality. It is used for applications that do not require potable water, including industrial cooling, landscape irrigation and construction.
The Public Service Board awarded the $4.5 million reclaimed water project at its July 28 meeting, and construction began in December. The project is partially funded through a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency grant.
The North Central project will expand the Haskell Street Wastewater Treatment Plant reclaimed water system, which currently serves Central El Paso parks, schools and cemeteries, Ascarate Golf Course, and the El Paso Zoo. The first phase of the expansion will serve Alta Vista Park, Alta Vista School, Loretto Park and Hillside School, while building the transmission line that will provide service to Fort Bliss in Phase 2.
Customers served in the second phase of the project could include the parade grounds, the Fort Bliss National Cemetery, the Underwood Golf Course and other Fort Bliss sites. The final phase will serve additional parks and schools in the North Central El Paso area.
Phase 1 will be completed next summer.
